Hacks to quickly lose weight… or your mind?

In a world obsessed with quick fixes and instant gratification, it's no surprise that we often find ourselves drawn to the latest weight loss hacks that promise miraculous results with minimal effort. From body wrapping to lemon water and beyond, there's no shortage of supposed shortcuts to shedding those extra pounds. But as tempting as they may be, many of these hacks suggested to lose weight (some people call them myths - are they?) simply don't deliver the results they claim . In my long career as a trainer, I have had clients coming in and asking me about the hacks that they should try and I swear… I gave up on ‘wrapping your body in plastic’… I mean??? Therefore, here is a blog to “unhack” your fitness goals and get you on the right track.

1. Body Wrapping

One of the most weird weight loss hacks that have been circulating for years is body wrapping. The idea behind it is that by tightly wrapping certain parts of your body with plastic or specialized wraps, you can "sweat out" toxins and lose inches in the process(Sounds so dumb). While it may seem like a tempting way to shed a few quick pounds to you, the reality is quite different.

Body wraps primarily lead to temporary water weight loss through excessive sweating. As soon as you rehydrate, the lost inches return. Moreover, there's no scientific evidence to support the notion that wrapping your body in plastic can burn fat or help you achieve lasting weight loss. In fact, it can be uncomfortable, potentially dangerous, and might even lead to skin irritations. So, STOP doing that to yourself.

2. Lemon Water Detox (I can at least understand why you got swayed by this)

The lemon water detox hack has gained popularity as a "cleanse" that promises weight loss, improved digestion, and a boost in energy. The idea is to start your day with a glass of warm water mixed with lemon juice. Here’s a quick fact check!

While lemon water does have some health benefits, such as providing vitamin C and aiding in digestion, it's not a magic potion for weight loss.(Click me to find out more!) Lemon water alone won't significantly impact your weight. Real and sustainable weight loss requires a balanced diet and regular exercise. Relying solely on lemon water can lead to nutrient deficiencies and you will feel hungry and fatigued.

3. Waist Trainers (I just have one question... why?)

You may have seen celebrities and social media influencers endorsing waist trainers as a way to achieve an hourglass figure but let me tell you, THEY DON’T USE IT. These corset-like garments claim to "train" your waist into a smaller shape through compression. However, the results are often temporary and come at a cost.

Waist trainers compress your organs, restrict your ability to breathe deeply, and weaken core muscles over time. They may also lead to digestive issues and discomfort. Any changes in waist size are likely due to the temporary compression effect and not fat loss. You will be better off spending your hard-earned $ into a personal training programme that is healthy and sustainable for you!

4. Diet Pills and Supplements ( Just kill me at this point )

I’m sure you would have seen ads that tell you to take a pill that makes you thinner. It in fact, does the opposite of what it claims to do and harms your body. The diet pill industry has countless products promising to help you shed pounds effortlessly. However, most diet pills and supplements are not regulated by any authority and often rely on unproven ingredients and dubious claims.

These pills may have side effects, including increased heart rate, jitteriness, and digestive issues. While some may suppress appetite or boost metabolism temporarily, the weight loss achieved through these means is usually short-lived.

A sustainable approach to weight loss involves making healthy, long-term changes to your diet and lifestyle.

5. Spot Reduction Exercises (*face palms*)

‘I want my belly fat GONE!’, ‘My thigh looks so huge’, ;My arms are sagging!; Do you also see yourself in these phrases? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Many people believe that focusing on specific exercises for problem areas, such as endless crunches for a flat stomach, can lead to spot reduction. Unfortunately, this is a persistent myth in the fitness world.

Spot reduction doesn't work because your body doesn't burn fat from a specific area just because you're exercising that area. Instead, fat loss occurs proportionally across your body.

To target specific areas, it's essential to engage in overall fat loss through a combination of cardio and strength training. For people who are already in this field - try compound exercises, for people who’re not, click the button to contact me!

6. Fad Diets (Kept this for the end cuz it ain’t ending)

Fad diets come and go, each with its unique set of rules and promises of rapid weight loss (I’ll be honest, when I started my journey, I tried many of them too). Whether it's the cabbage soup diet, the grapefruit diet, or the baby food diet, these plans typically rely on severe calorie restriction or the exclusion of entire food groups.

While caloric deficit is a thing, what you’re doing is nutritional destruction. While you might experience initial weight loss on a fad diet, it's often unsustainable and can lead to nutritional deficiencies. Your body needs a balanced intake of macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, and fats) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) to function properly.

So, instead of chasing quick fixes, opt for a well-rounded, balanced diet that you can maintain for the long haul.

Conclusion

In the pursuit of weight loss, it's easy to fall prey to tempting shortcuts and hacks. However, the reality is that sustainable weight loss requires time, effort, and a commitment to a healthy lifestyle. Body wrapping, lemon water detoxes, waist trainers, diet pills, fad diets, and spot reduction exercises are just a few examples of hacks that fall short of their promises.

Rather than seeking quick fixes, focus on making gradual, sustainable changes to your diet and exercise routine.
